Day 1 – Erie to Iowa

All and all, day 1 was a very uneventful day.  We drive 10.5 hours and probably made about 2.5 hours worth of stops including this amazing Vietnamese restaurant in Iowa.

This place had tripe and tendon on the menu. I think that’s leaning toward pretty damn authentic. The food we had was amazing.

When you do Airbnb, probably the most awkward part is arriving and going into someone else’s house when they are not there. That is how it was at Cedar Rapids.

Not a huge deal, just a stranger walking up to a random house casually toying with the keypad on the garage door and quickly ducking inside as it opens.

The house was immaculate. I ran out to get our bags and when I came in, Laurie was gone. Gone, in a strange house and in a strange land… I was looking around the empty house whisper-yelling, “Laurie?!”

I walked through the living room like it was booby-trapped till I heard her call down from upstairs.

I was setting my pack down and milling about on my tablet when Laurie walked in and said, “They have a bidet.”

I went to the bathroom to check it out.  I actually wanted to try it out. I decided to err on the side of caution however. I had no idea how these things worked and I had a vision of me turning it on, it going crazy and spraying water all over the bathroom as the hosts just happen to get home. The vision ended with me and a dry silhouette on the wall with the rest of the bathroom drenched as my wife and our two hosts stood in the doorway shaking their heads at me with firm disapproval.

When we left the next morning, we probably spent an hour watching (me listening) to Bidet videos on YouTube.  Laurie found the one below on YouTube. Hilarious. Watch it through.

We grabbed dinner at a place called Third Base Brewery and it was pretty tasty. There was an odd occurrence when a rather voluptuous lady was trying to scoot by a sitting gentleman and started bouncing her bosom on the top of his head. She made it look like it happened as she tried to sideways scoot by, but Laurie and I were pretty sure it was no accident. This was reinforced when she came back out and did the same thing again. The entire table was not too pleased, words were exchanged, and the ladies left with a sneer.

We made it back to the Airbnb and got to meet with our hosts. They were super cool, we were super tired, and we crashed.

End of Day 1.
